The court heard how Ms Sutton used to be positive but she became isolated and anxious and eventually took her own life.
Gane, 31, was found guilty of controlling and coercive behaviour, in addition to causing actual bodily harm and assault by beating, following a trial at St Albans Crown Court in Hertfordshire.
Judge Philip Grey told him: “You have left three children without their mother. Their lives have been shattered. She was keen to be in a stable relationship and then she had the great misfortune to meet you.
“You overwhelmed her you turned on the charm when you met her. You moved in after only a few weeks to her home."

Mum Kellie was found unconscious in August by Gane – five months after their relationship began.
She died in hospital three days later when her life support was withdrawn.
A week after her death, cops were contacted by a friend of Gane who told officers he had concerns about their relationship.
The man said Gane told him he had “bust Kellie’s head open” after he lost his temper.
Medical records confirm the pair had attended a Urgent Care Centre in Welwyn Garden City on June 3 where Kellie had a 3cm wound on the top of her head which needed to be glued.
The brute even made jokes about her death to friends and had told pals he had met a new woman.
