Derek Smith court case
A man jailed for 16 years over a string of child sex attacks has become his family's fourth convicted child sex offender.
Derek Smith, 50, from Darlington, was convicted following a trial at Teesside Crown Court.
The former labourer, whose crimes date back to the 1980s, was also handed a sexual harm prevention order.
Smith was convicted of two indecent assaults, four rapes, two sexual assaults, two charges of sexual activity with a child and one other serious sexual offence.
The court heard that Smith's father, brother and nephew have also been convicted of child sex offences.
Smith's father George, 79, was jailed for eight years over the sexual abuse of two girls in 2010.
His brother George Smith Jr, 54, was jailed for attempted rape and three indecent assaults against a girl in the 1970s.
His nephew Mark Smith, 20, is also serving a seven-year sentence following a conviction for the rape and sexual assault of boys.
The court heard that Smith is likely to die behind bars due to a failing liver.
