A man has been killed after being struck by four vehicles on the M66 in Greater Manchester.

Detectives believe the man was walking along the northbound lanes of the motorway between junctions two and three when he was hit by an Audi A5.

The victim was then struck by three vehicles on the southbound carriageway.

Greater Manchester Police were called to the motorway at about 1.57am on Saturday, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers have arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of driving under the influence, and he remains in police custody.

Sergeant Helen Hallworth, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, has appealed for any dashcam footage from motorists who were driving in the area at the time, as it will assist her team in investigating the "tragic death".

She added: "We believe we have identified this man and we have now spoken to his next of kin.

"However, we still need witnesses who may have seen this man walking up the motorway to contact us as a matter of urgency."

CCTV captures armed moped gang in North London newsagent raid

An armed gang have been filmed smashing their way into a newsagent in Barnet in order to raid the cigarette cabinet.

The footage, released by police, shows two of the men forcefully breaking their way into the cigarette stand behind the counter.

The four suspects, all described as males in their 20s, stole large quantities of tobacco from the shop before leaving the scene on mopeds.

The burglary took place in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, 10 July. Police are urging anyone who recognises the suspects in the video to get in touch.

Police car crashes on the rise in London

The number of crashes involving police cars pursuing vehicles and responding to 999 calls, is increasing in London, figures show.

Between April 2015 and April 2016 there were 1,748 collisions involving police vehicles - 256 more crashes than in 2013/14.

In 2015/16 there were 498 collisions involving police cars pursuing other vehicles - an increase of 64 crashes on the previous year.

The new figures, obtained by Conservative London Assembly member Steve O'Connell, come after a series of serious incidents involving police cars in London.

"The safety of both police officers and the general public has to be the highest priority during high-speed pursuits and responses.

"Clearly there is a need for police vehicles to drive at high speeds in emergency situations but it is a worrying trend to see an increase in the number of collisions and one that must be reversed.

"It is vitally important that police pursuits are conducted as safely as possible. I'll be asking the Mayor to look closely at this increase and to assess ways in which the risks can be reduced for all involved."

Ex priest jailed for 12 years over child sex abuse charges

A former Catholic priest has been jailed for 12 years after admitting abusing 12 boys and one girl.

Philip Temple, 66, admitted the historical child sex abuse charges that date back to the 1970s.

He also admitted lying whilst under oath almost two decades ago when he was cleared of child sex abuse charges against a young boy.

The victim told the court he self-harmed, became a recluse and even tried to take his own life after the previous trials. Judge Christopher Hehir apologised to the victim saying, "I am sorry justice was not done when you came to court in 1998 and 1999."

Temple abused boys and a girl whilst working as a social worker in Lambeth and Wandsworth in the 1970s. He became a priest in 1988 and served at a church in Cockfosters where he abused a further two children.

Commuter knocked unconscious after bumping into a man at Harrow on the Hill station

A commuter has been knocked out cold and left with a broken cheek bone after bumping into a man at a train station.

The attack only stopped when a station worker rushed to intervene. Credit: British transport Police

The suspect immediately became hostile after the 22-year-old victim bumped into him in the ticket area. The suspect punched the victim several times and repeatedly kicked him as he fell to the floor.

The incident, which happened just before 2pm on Friday 24 July, has been described by British Transport Police as a "seemingly unprovoked assault."

Catholic priest pleads guilty to 27 counts of historical sexual assault against children in his care

A Catholic priest has pleaded guilty to 27 counts of historical sexual assault against children in his care.

Philip Temple, 66, worked in various children's care homes around London in the 1970s before being ordained as a priest.

Temple, who had previously pleaded guilty to 20 non-recent sexual abuse and perjury charges at Croydon Crown Court in April, admitted seven further counts of non-recent sexual assault when he appeared for trial at Woolwich Crown Court.

Temple was employed by Wandsworth Borough Council, at Woking Close and Hertfield House between 1972 and 1974, before working for Lambeth Borough Council between 1974 and 1977 at Rowan House in Croydon.

He carried out the offences against both boys and girls residing in the care homes over the five-year period.

He then changed career path to become a priest and served at Christ the King Monastery, Vita Et Pax in Cockfosters where he abused two altar boys.

One of these victims made allegations that led to two trials during which Temple perjured himself by continually maintaining his innocence.

Temple has since pleaded guilty to perjury in relation to those proceedings.

He was arrested in July 2015 as part of Operation Trinity, which was launched after two allegations of abuse were reported to police in November 2012.

The investigation was launched by detectives from Scotland Yard's Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command after information was received by officers that implicated Temple in multiple offences.

Temple was employed to care for the vulnerable children whose trust he betrayed by subjecting them to abuse.

A man has appeared in court accused of murdering a 24-year-old woman in Birmingham 35 years ago.

Nova Welsh's body was found in a utility cupboard at a block of flats in Lighthorne Avenue in Ladywood on 18 August, 1981.

A post-mortem examination revealed the mother-of-two had been strangled.

Osmond Bell, of Regent Road, Handsworth, was charged with her murder following a "cold case" inquiry by West Midlands Police.

The 59-year-old appeared in the dock at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, accused of carrying out the killing on a day between 25 July and 19 August, 1981.

He was remanded in custody until a crown court hearing on Friday.

Shopkeeper Killer Given Life For 'Execution'

James Matthews, Sky News' Scotland Correspondent, said: "Inside court, a section of the public gallery was filled by supporters of Tanveer Ahmed.

"As he was led away from the dock he faced them, raised his hand to the air, and shouted in Arabic.

"One told Sky News he said: 'Muhammad is the prophet, he is the only one'. 

"They returned the sentiment, with a collective voice, as the killer was forced down stairs into the holding cells beneath court."

Mr Shah, described as "a pillar of the community", was a member of the Ahmadiyya community.

The court heard that Ahmadiyyas differ from other Muslims in their belief that the Prophet Muhammad was not the final Prophet.

Mr Shah and his family had moved to Scotland from Pakistan in the 1990s to escape persecution.

His final Facebook update offered Easter greetings "to my beloved Christian nation".

A statement released on behalf of Mr Shah's family said: "Asad's family have lost a peaceful, kind and loving brother, son and uncle who can never be replaced.

"Most of his family have now left or are in the process of leaving Scotland, a country they came to seek safety in."

The murder shocked the close-knit community in south Glasgow, where several vigils were held in Mr Shah's memory.

An online fundraising page for his family raised more than £100,000.

Rafiq Hayat, of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK, said: "Mr Shah's only crime was to spread a message of love and compassion and the whole city paid tribute to him for his kindness and care.

"No matter how brutal the crime and how evil the ideology, the people of Glasgow and the UK have made clear that we will not let hate prevail."

Police have released CCTV footage of a man who they believe may have witnessed the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

A gang of six men stabbed Stephen, 18, to death in a racially motivated attack in Eltham, southeast London, in April 1993. 

Gary Dobson, 37, and David Norris, 36, were found guilty of the attack and jailed for life in 2012, but the other attackers have not yet been found.

Newly released CCTV footage shows a man wearing a 'V' emblem jacket which police previously appealed for information about.

The video was captured two hours before the attack, in an off licence 330 yards from the bus stop on Well Hall Road where Stephen was murdered.

Witnesses have previously reported seeing a man in a 'V' emblem jacket on Well Hall Road roundabout around the time Stephen was killed, Met Police said.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Le Pere said: "We are appealing for this man to come forward so that we can speak to him to establish if he can assist with our enquiries, or if we can eliminate this strand of the investigation.

"He was seen in the off licence at 8pm and then again later that night not far from where Stephen was attacked.

"It is important that we speak with him." 

Footage from the off licence has been digitally enhanced

After being stabbed twice Stephen Lawrence managed to escape his attackers and run 130 yards before collapsing.

He was taken to Brook Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.  

Met Police said that the digitally enhanced CCTV images were recently obtained during a review of the murder case. 

DCI Le Pere added: "The investigation remains open. 

"Two individuals were found guilty of murder, but officers continue to follow lines of enquiry. 

"We are hoping that over the passage of time allegiances may have changed, people may have moved away and feel more confident coming forward."
