The company which runs England’s newest prison, HMP Millsike, has denied reports on social media that a full-blown riot broke out there.
The reports suggested that prisoners had taken over a wing, that officers had run away to hide, and that the riot squad was being called in.
However, Mitie, which has managed Millsike since it accepted its first prisoners in April this year, told Inside Time that there had been “a minor incident on House Block E which resulted in damage to the sprinkler system and some minimal water damage. However, the issue was managed effectively by colleagues and swiftly resolved. Allegations regarding a ‘riot’ or stabbing are untrue.”
The spokesperson added: “Mitie remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of everyone at HMP Millsike. Our dedicated teams deliver professional care in often challenging circumstances, and the prison continues to operate in line with established protocols.”
