Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service sent four pumps to tackle what it initially described as a "large fire" at Winchester jail.
The call was received at 7.07pm on Friday and crews found a single cell fire that had spread to a second cell.
They provided ventilation and support to prison staff and were stood down.
No one was injured in the incident
