A US man is being held over the death of his American girlfriend in the Caribbean resort city of Playa del Carmen, according to Mexican authorities.
Federal police said the man, identified as 59-year-old John Loveless, was detained at Cancun airport on Sunday as he was about to board a flight to Atlanta.
Tamra Turpin, 36, was found dead in a condo the couple had rented in the resort last Wednesday.
A forensic examination found she had died of asphyxia by strangulation.
According to the prosecutors' office in Quintana Roo state, Loveless is facing a criminal homicide investigation.
He appeared before a judge on Friday, but declined to make an official declaration in the case.
The St Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the couple had gone on holiday to Mexico together.
Family members told the newspaper that Loveless told them Ms Turpin had been taken to hospital after suffering seizures, but died after she had been released.
GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money to return Ms Turpin's body to the US and has raised thousands of dollars.
A post on the page reads: "Tamra Turpin's life was cut tragically short. She was an amazing person who touched so many people's lives.
"If we can all just give back a part of what Tamra gave us we will finally be able to bring her home and say our goodbyes."
The US Embassy in Mexico City confirmed Ms Turpin's death and said it was providing consular assistance.
