A second disturbance in less than a week at a maximum security jail has ended peacefully. Three prison officers were stabbed in the incident at Shotts Prison, Lanarkshire, which broke out on Tuesday evening.
Up to half a dozen long-term prisoners were said to be involved in the disturbance at a special unit which provides accommodation for those who have problems coping with mainstream prison life.
Concern
The three prison officers injured in last night's disturbance required hospital treatment.
A Scottish Prison Service spokesman said the disturbance was confined to the special unit.
Prison authorities said there were no hostages involved. It is understood that up to 10 prisoners are currently accommodated in the special unit.
The cause of the disturbance is not yet known. A number of fire engines were on stand-by outside the prison last night.
Last Thursday, about 50 inmates refused to return to their cells and two prison officers were taken to hospital.
A large number of police officers were stationed around the prison, which currently has 540 inmates, as negotiations continued between prison staff and the inmates involved.
The standoff ended peacefully the following day.
